Elder and Deacon Blog

This is an experimental web log (blog) to assist the Elders and Deacons in the Presbytery of Donegal discuss ways of serving the Lord in their settings! The idea was raised at our recent Leadership Development workshops. Perhaps this would be a useful way for the "techies" among us to create a discussion group.

Blessings to you all!

Rev. Douglas Hileman from Middle Octorara has a very good program of role playing for Deacon training. He could be reached at: mopcusa@epix.net or 717.786.3402.

What would be some appropriate ways to strengthen our Elders and Deacons? What have you used for training, coaching, or mentoring to improve these ministries?

Here is some help for the Nominating Committee. A Pastor friend gave me this years ago and I've found it to be very helpful.

Nominating Committee — Officers’ Worksheet
Considerations for the Role and Function of the Nominating Committee

Preparatory Meetings:

Pastor meets with the Nominating Committee, one or two times, to discuss Scripture regarding the nature of Church and qualifications for office.

Scripture references:
1 Corinthians 12:12-27; Ephesians 4:11-16; Acts 2:42-47, 6:1-7, 20:28; 1 Samuel 16:1-13; 1 Peter 5:1-9; 1 Timothy 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-9; Luke 16:1-13
• The Nominating Committee is like a “team of trained surgeons operating” on the Body of Christ to enable the best future health of the body.
• The Pastor can participate like any other member, but without vote.

Considerations as specific names are nominated.

✔ The conservation of the Nominating Committee should focus upon the gifts of the person being considered. What is said in the committee meeting is private and confidential and should not be taken outside the meeting.

1. Acts 20:28, 14:23
Given where our church is now, where we’re going, and what our goals are — who should be nominated as a elder, deacon, and trustee? Should we elect elders, deacons, and trustees who are not yet ready or who would promote disharmony or stagnation — simply to fill slots?
2. 1 Timothy 3:4, 5, Ephesians 6:10ff
If a church is like a family in loving relationship or an army in spiritual warfare, what does that say about people — especially elders — nominated for servant leadership? What is the church to be?
3. 1 Corinthians 12, 1 Peter 2:4ff
What are the dangers of seeing the church only as an organization (instead of an organism) or a building of stones (instead of a kingdom of priests)? How is the Church different from Kiwanis, Rotary, the Lions Club, the Grange, 4-H, sports teams, the volunteer fire department or ambulance crew?
4. Elders and Deacons may have up to 2 consecutive 3 year terms (G-14.0201). Then 1 year must be taken off.
Trustee’s have no restrictions. (Though churches may have their own bylaws regarding how long folks serve.
5. Each prospective candidate shall receive an information page for that office.
6. Session must approve the list of candidates (in case the Session knows any reason why a person should not be nominated.)

Thanks, Thornwood for posting the helpful hints for nominating committees. I believe item 6 may not be correct - Session is not required to approve a list of candidates.

Why isn't this blog used? What might be helpful for people?

It would be great to get a good listing of those important topics to cover in a solid Elder or Deacon training event. Could you send in or blog those issues or areas that you find particularly helpful in your own training? Or, could you send in those areas that were not covered, but would have been incredibly helpful? Many thanks!

I am leading a retreat for new and old Deacons on 1/10. They want to focus on both biblical and community building activties. Does anyone have some creative ideas? Thanks.
